Tell us about your community building activities in 2020?

2020 was a very trying year but Young Educated Determined to Succeed Inc. (YEDS) was able to conduct program virtually to keep youth engaged. YEDS hosted a drive up book bag drive and was able to supply 170 youth with new book bags and school supplies. YEDS volunteered passing out food boxes and PPE gear to families in need. Due to covid we couldn’t co-host VAV annual holiday party however we did supply over 75 youth with Christmas gifts to help those families in need during the holiday.

What community building goals did you accomplish or milestones did you hit in 2020?

YEDS was able to keep 80% of its youth active with virtual activities despite Covid. We were able to hire 10 youth workers during the summer months for virtual work experience. YEDS assisted passing out over 3000 boxes of food to family in need.

Nominator Justification

During the past 12 months Young Educated Determined to Succeed Inc (YEDS) has organized an essay contest to try and keep students engaged during Covid and being home remotely. YEDS hosted a community book bag drive in September and was able to provide over 150 youth with book bags and school supply. YEDS collaborated with Victims Against Violence to host a drive up toy drive. Through these efforts 75 youth receive holiday gifts this past December. Youth in the YEDS Entrepreneurship Youth Program were engaged in business plan writing while being introduced to the concept of business planning, marketing, finance, and management.  Youth created a workable business plan and launched small businesses by working together. The entrepreneurs attended workshops to develop networking, public speaking, negotiation, life and customer service skills. Business pop shops were a great success. It was an excellent program. Youth in the YEDS Entrepreneurship Youth Program were engaged in business plan writing while being introduced to the concept of business planning, marketing, finance, and management.  Youth created a workable business plan and launched small businesses by working together.
