Community Builder

Tell us about your community building activities in 2020?

In response to COVID19, in March 2020 we launched the reSET Forum: Creating the Future We Want to Inhabit, a monthly virtual gathering of social innovators rooted in community impact and collaboration. In October, reSET led a Social Innovation track during StartupWeek, which included panels on Social Innovation at the Neighborhood Level, Bootstrapping your Business, and more. We also produced Beyond Business as Usual: Leading for Change, bringing 10 national speakers virtually to Hartford.

What community building goals did you accomplish or milestones did you hit in 2020?

Virtual events allowed us to expand our reach and bring speakers from around the world, including Lorna Davis, ex CEO of Danone North America, Andrei Cherny, CEO of Aspiration; Rahama Wright, CEO of Shea Yeleen; Nydia Shipman, co-founder of the Worthy Company, Allison Hooper, co-founder of Vermont Creamery, Camille Canon, partner at Purpose, and more. Locally, we formalized the Hartford Culinary Collaborative alongside 6 partners who believe that food is power in the community.

Space

Describe your space

reSET’s coworking and office space offers our community an affordable and welcoming place to work, learn, and create. Become a member of a vibrant, inspired, collaborative, supportive and action-oriented community! We’re passionate about spurring economic development and about creating positive social and environmental impact at the same time. Member benefits include access to coaching, workshops, printing, internet, mailboxes, and more.

What are the coolest, most popular features of your space?

Coworking members include entrepreneurs, non-profits, freelancers, and many more. We typically attract members who have shared values of creating a better world through impactful business. Pre-covid, we frequently held "Beer30" gatherings, community forums, workshops, impromptu ping-pong games, and more. During the pandemic we have adapted our space and created a dynamic modular arrangement that allows for safe workspaces and continued presence on site.

What impact did your space make in 2020?

When Key Bookstore experienced a surge of orders and suddenly needed to expand their operations to keep up with the demand, reSET jumped at the chance to invite their business into the space. While physical distancing has limited our capacity in some ways, we have strived to maintain a safe and inviting environment. During the power outage in August, we opened our doors to anyone who needed a place to come and recharge, regardless of membership status.

Program

Describe your program

reSET’s Impact Accelerator catalyzes social entrepreneurs in the Greater Hartford area tackling society’s toughest challenges. The program targets small to mid-sized businesses and startups to strengthen their business models and amplify their social or environmental impact. The Impact Accelerator was a winner of the U.S. SBA Growth Accelerator Competition in 2015, and in 2020 was selected as one of six Village Capital Communities nationwide. What are the coolest, most popular features of your program?

We are uniquely focused on building the social enterprise sector: businesses focused on growing impact alongside profit. Our Impact Accelerator connects startups to early-stage customers and industry experts and mentors, and provides coaching to hold companies accountable to important start-up milestones. Cohorts work out of reSET coworking and get members-only access to our professional volunteer network which includes legal support, accountants, angel investors, entrepreneurs, and more.

What impact did your program make in 2020?

The 2020 cohort pivoted online, and included impactful local startups like Legacy Lineage, providing virtual early childhood education tools to Hartford families challenged by remote learning; seedership, a social impact and storytelling platform to help small, local businesses differentiate and grow from the good they do for their communities; and Her Move, a woman-owned boutique recruitment firm focused on hiring women into critical leadership positions at growing software companies.
