As the Business Improvement District for the Park City, the mission of the Bridgeport Downtown Special Services District (DSSD) is to promote the preservation and development of the downtown business district; make the area more attractive and accessible; and enhance the public perception of downtown Bridgeport through overseeing and managing its appearance, security, and cleanliness. The DSSD is operated under the direction of a nine member Board of Commissioners representing property owners.
How are you engaged/involved in supporting/advocating for the CT entrepreneur ecosystem?
The Bridgeport Downtown Special Services District supports the needs of the growing vibrant and diverse businesses within the 30 blocks in of our heart-shaped neighborhood. Our team of Downtown Ambassadors keep the neighborhood clean and friendly. We provide free marketing services through the dynamic Colorful Bridgeport campaign platform, and produce community events including the Downtown Farmers Market. Finally, we assist district businesses to navigate local and state government resources.
What improved in the CT entrepreneur ecosystem due to your involvement/advocacy in 2020?
The Colorful Bridgeport platform has significantly improved the public perception of Downtown Bridgeport and the many assets within the neighborhood. The businesses of Downtown Bridgeport have gained higher visibility with a wider range of prospective customers. The Downtown Ambassadors ensure consistency in terms of street cleanliness and safety that allows business owners to operate without concern over whether the streets will be full of garbage, or that their customers will be welcomed in.
Nominator Justification
Colorful Bridgeport is an integrated marketing and beautification program offered by the Bridgeport DSSD. It creates a distinct identity for Downtown Bridgeport while improving the perception of the neighborhood. Through public art, events, plantings, and online and print promotions; Colorful Bridgeport has attracted visitors to and revitalized the Downtown by celebrating the entrepreneurs, cultural institutions, people, streets, places, and spaces of the neighborhood.
