Tell us about your community-building activities in 2019 (<500 characters)

We support the growth of small and mid-sized companies working in the submarine/defense and offshore wind supply chains. We work with the prime contractors to convey business opportunities, reduce red tape, improve communication, and help give companies the tools they need to succeed. In 2019, we hosted several meetings and events, including hosting a presentation by Electric Boat on their "Strategic Sourcing" offload of 4.2M man-hours of manufacturing annually for 10+ years, a networking event with the CT Port Authority on the Thames River Water Taxi (past Electric Boat, Naval Submarine Base NLON, New London's State Pier and Ft. Trumbull), a workshop by StoryMatters on refining your business pitch, an overview of the Eastern CT Workforce Investment Board's programs for workforce development in the manufacturing sector, an overview of UConn's technology insertion and workforce development resources, a tour and introduction to the resources at the CT Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT) and more. The NMC is funded by Thames River Innovation Places, a project made possible by CTNext.

What community-building goals did you accomplish or milestones did you hit in 2019? (<500 characters)

We reached our grant funding goal by securing funds from the CTNext Innovation Places program and the Economic Development Administration, and are support by UConn's Office of Naval Research Navy STEM grant. Additionally, although not yet finalized, we are working through contracts with two primes to support development of their supply chains and are on our way towards self-sustainability. We surpassed our goal of 69 members (we launched in Nov. 2018 and currently have 80 member companies.) We accomplished goals of establishing a website (it is currently functioning with a public face and a members only portal with additional resources), and establishing a Board of Advisors of at least 5 (we currently have a Board of Advisors of 19). Additionally, in 2019 we teed up the incorporation of the Naval and Maritime Consortium, Inc., a 501c6 not-for-profit organization, which was officially incorporated in January.

What people are saying about Alexandra Halvordson...

Quietly and with little fanfare Ali has built an incredible network of marine and wind companies, partners, and professionals in CT called the Naval and Maritime Consortium. They based out of the Thames River Innovation Place.
